J.S. Bach: Fugue in B minor, BWV 579
The full title of this piece by J.S. Bach is "Fugue in B minor on a Theme of Corelli". The theme, actually TWO themes, come from the Vivace movement of Corelli's Trio Sonata, op. 3, no. 4, composed in 1689. Bach takes the first four measure of Corelli's Sonata and, in an homage to the great Italian master, lets his inspiration show us what else can be made of that opening material. He creates a "double fugue", with the two themes weaving in, out and around each other for 102 measures (Corelli's original Sonata movement was 39 measures long). A beautiful, challenging and inspiring work.
